"Putting together a network of many sub-networks has its challenges," says Andy Zynga, vice president of business development at Telindus, a network integrator and VNO. "''Hygiene factors'' include availability, bandwidth and jitter. There are also process-related SLAs that allow a VNO to work with the clients, such as ensuring that the client will be contacted when there is 955 a fault."Zynga does not see the main challenges as technical, but rather more based on business processes. "You have got to be quick, flexible and have excellent [network] designers. You also need a very good database of all the current network offers," he says. Like the other VNO providers, Zynga argues that carriers can suffer from being more focused on their networks than on the processes required to actually set up and run a service to clients. "It comes down to who is close enough to the customer to really understand his requirements," he adds.
Second, Pervasive''s core customer base of thousands of business-application developers all have some sort of integration problem. "Each database, every product we ship and every application on top john of it is empty, with no data in it," he said. "Those applications have to co-exist inside a broader IT architecture and work with other applications. There''s a synergy with our and Data Junction''s product lines."Third, he said, the two companies are compatible in terms of company culture and profitability. Data Junction deere has been profitable since 1990, and Pervasive has been profitable for the past 10 quarters. Data Junction took in $14 million in revenues during the last fiscal year, with $2.7 in million in income. Pervasive took in over $39 million in revenues and $6.7 in income during the same timeframe.
VOOM is hardly alone here. Unless you have DirecTV or Dish Network and want to shell out $1,000 for their HD satellite-box-and-TiVo hybrid, you have little choice. A PC equipped tractor with an HD tuner card can capture front and record over-the-air HD programs, but there''s usually no program guide, so that''s really a pain. VOOM says it will have a DVR offering later this year, but if they follow DirecTV''s model and overcharge the early adopters, that''s little consolation. Some cable networks are supplying HD DVRs for modest rental fees, but those haven''t percolated nationwide yet.
